No. 4 Bentley pulls away from Women's Basketball

WALTHAM, Mass.— The Assumption University women's basketball could not keep up with No. 4 Bentley University, as the Falcons pulled away for a 58-39 Northeast-10 Conference decision Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
Assumption started fast, as Marina Callahan and Teagan Curran combined to go 4-of-6 from the floor in the first six minutes of the contest to go up 9-4. Bentley slowly chipped away at the deficit and would tie the contest at 11-11 to finish the quarter. The Falcons would carry their momentum into the second, scoring the first ten points of the frame to go up 21-11, but Callahan would end the run with a three-point play with 5:19 to go in the half. Callahan added one more basket before Teagan Kamm got in on the action with a turnaround layup, cutting the margin to just three (21-18). After Niya Morgan and Callahan exchanged buckets, Maggie Whitmore scored the final four points of the half, sending the hosts up 27-20 at intermission. 
 
After Molly Stokes converted on a layup to begin the second half, the Falcons went on a 7-0 run, forcing Assumption head coach Kerry Phayre to call a timeout. Bentley continued to pull away in the third quarter, as the Greyhounds struggled from the floor, but with the hosts up 41-24 in the waning seconds, Grace Leary drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer, sending the two teams into the fourth quarter, with Bentley leading 41-27. In the fourth quarter, the teams would trade baskets throughout, with the Falcons coming away with a 58-39 final score. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Marina Callahan led the charge for Assumption, as she poured in 15 points, nine rebounds, three blocks, two assists, and two steals. 
  • Bentley outrebounded Assumption 37-33 while outscoring the Greyhounds 32-26 in the paint. 
  • The two teams combined to shoot 17-of-18 from the charity strip. 
  • Bentley leads the all-time series 81-13
