Women's Basketball punch their ticket to the NE10 Championship with 54-48 win against Adelphi

WORCESTER, Mass.—For the first time since the 2012-13 season, the Assumption University women's basketball team will be playing for the Northeast-10 Conference Championship. The No. 6 seeded Greyhounds held off the No. 7 seeded Adelphi University in the NE10 Semifinals Thursday evening inside Andrew Laska Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
In the first quarter, Adelphi capitalized on six Assumption turnovers as they ran out to a 12-10 lead led by Kaitlyn O'Connell with a pair of three-pointers. The Greyhounds controlled the paint, as they had all ten points scored in the paint by Kaijhe Hall, Maeve Moriarty, and Teagan Kamm
 
The Greyhounds flipped the script in the second quarter, as they used a more balanced attack to regain the lead early in the second, as Molly Stokes drained a corner three to put the Greyhounds in front at 14-13. After trading the next few baskets, Olivia Found sparked a 10-0 run for the Hounds, as they took a 26-22 lead into the intermission. 
 
Adelphi battled back in the third, converting on 10-of-13 shots to regain the lead. Gamila Betton and Christina Sanchez combined for 11 points as the Panthers carried a 44-42 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Assumption used lockdown defense in the fourth, holding Adelphi to 2-of-13 from the floor, to pull away for a 54-48 final score. Marina Callahan and Molly Stokes led the charge in the fourth, as the duo combined for eight of the 12 points for the Hounds.  


INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Kaijhe Hall led the way with a game-high 15 points, adding eight rebounds, five assists, two steals, and two blocks. 
  • Molly Stokes added 13 points and two blocks, while Callahan missed the double-double with nine points, eight rebounds, two assists, and three blocks. 
  • Assumption outrebounded Adelphi 42-24 while also outscoring the Panthers in the paint, 26-24.
  • There were ten lead changes and nine ties in the matchup. 
  • The Greyhounds will head to the Northeast-10 Conference Finals for the first time since the 2012-13 season, as the Hounds fell 68-59 to Bentley. 
  • Assumption leads the all-time series 10-5.
