Baseball edged in a slugfest at Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H.— Eric Gianense and Matthew Holbrook combined to drive in seven runs, but the Assumption University baseball team fell to Franklin Pierce University 21-12, in the rubber match of their three-game series on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Christopher Manzo put Assumption in front in the top of the first inning, as he drove in Cody Smith with a single to third base, but in the bottom of the frame, Franklin Pierce plated 12 runs to go up 12-1. The hosts added three runs in the third, three in the fourth, and one more in the fifth to go up 19-1. The Greyhounds were able to strike for six runs in the top of the seventh, which included a grand slam from Matthew Holbrook, cutting the deficit down to 19-7. 

After a two-run home run by the Ravens in the bottom of the seventh, Eric Giarnese went deep before Patrick Kostiw scored on a fielder's choice, making it 21-9. Giarnese struck again in the ninth, with a two-RBI single to center, before James Mahoney scored on a Will Panza sacrifice fly to right, making the final score 21-12.
