HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One Score: American International College 31, Assumption University 27
American International College started with one run in both the first and second innings to go up 2-0 through two innings. From there, the game went sideways. The Yellow Jackets put up a nine-spot in the top of the third, while Assumption responded with five runs in the bottom half of the frame. AIC went up 19-5 following an eight-run top of the fourth, while the Greyhounds cut the deficit down to 19-8 following a three-run inning.
In the top of the fifth, the Yellow Jackets struck for three runs to go up 22-8, before the Hounds erupted for 10 runs, with five runs coming off the bat of
Jack Barry, who launched two home runs in the fifth. After Assumption cut the deficit down to just four runs (22-18), AIC added one run in the sixth and one more in the seventh, extending their lead to 24-18.
Cody Smith went deep with a solo shot, making it 24-19.
The Springfield, Massachusetts club continued to see their offense add to their lead, as they tacked on five more in the top of the eighth.
Chris Klein and the Assumption baseball team would not go quietly, as he became the second player in the game to his multiple home runs in the same inning, as he hit a solo home run before capping off the eight-run frame with a grand slam (29-27). AIC finished up the scoring in the top of the ninth with two runs, breaking the NCAA Division II record for the most runs in a single game between two teams (58) and RBI (53).
With four home runs in the game,
Jack Barry set a new program record for home runs in a game, while the Greyhounds blasted eight home runs on the day, which is the second most in a single game (9 vs. Merrimack, April 1, 2002), and the most in the NE10 since Le Moyne hit eight at Seton Hill on February 24, 2012.
Game Two Score: American International College 4, Assumption University 0
Unlike game one, the nightcap was a pitcher's duel. American International's Nick Serce and Assumption's
Cole Constantine combined to toss 10.0 innings with just one earned run and 10 strikeouts. AIC was the first team to break through, as they scored one run in the top of the third, before adding one in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one final run in the sixth to take game two 4-0.
