Sgambati's 49-yarder clips Franklin Pierce, 28-26

RINDGE, N.H.— Massimo Sgambati drilled a 49-yard field goal with 30 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, lifting the Assumption University football team past Franklin Pierce University 28-26 in Northeast 10 Conference action, Saturday afternoon at Sodexo Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
Assumption started fast, as Jay Kastantin found Will McNamara for a 4-yard touchdown pass on the first drive, before adding another TD pass before the end of the first quarter, finding AJ Robinson for a 13-yard pass to go up 14-0. Franklin Pierce got on the board early in the second quarter, as Adrian Parker found Kameron Massey, but that was responded to by a 26-yard field goal by Massimo Sgambati. The Ravens would add one more touchdown pass by Parker before the break, but their extra point was missed, sending the game to halftime with Assumption leading 17-13. 
 
Franklin Pierce took their first lead of the game five minutes into the second half, as they scored on a four-yard rushing score. The Greyhounds would not end the quarter quietly, as Kastantin found Connor Smith on an 80-yard double move score, torching the FPU secondary to go up 25-19 following a two-point conversion. 
 
In the fourth quarter, the Ravens went back up front halfway through the frame, but Assumption's defense got a key three-and-out, which set up a 49-yard game-winning field goal by Sgambati. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Jay Kastantin led the Assumption offense by going 18-of-28 passing for 241 yards and three touchdowns, while adding 127 yards on the ground. 
  • Connor Smith proved to be a number one wide receiver, as he pulled down four receptions for 148 yards and a score, while Will McNamara added three catches for 22 yards and a touchdown. AJ Robinson hauled in the other TD pass from Kastantin. 
  • Owen Fitzgerald continues to lead the NE10 in tackles with 13, with two for a loss., Tindell Frick added three quarterback hurries, and Brady Madigan had a pair of pass breakups.
