SPRINGFIELD, Mass. —The Assumption University women's basketball team saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end, as the Greyhounds fell to American International College in Northeast 10 Conference action, Saturday afternoon.
THE BASICS:
Scores: American International College 68, Assumption University 53
Records: Greyhounds (11-2, 4-2 NE10) | Yellow Jackets (10-4, 4-2 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The scoring was slow to start, as American International led 8-4 at the halfway point of the first quarter. But the latter portion of the frame, the scoring ramped up, as Assumption outscored the hosts 13-11 in the final five minutes, but trailed 19-17 after 10 minutes. The second quarter was all Yellow Jackets, as they started the frame on a 12-0 run before the Greyhounds saw a ball tickle the twine. Before long, the two teams were heading into the locker rooms with AIC leading 39-22.
In the third quarter, Assumption slowly chipped away at the deficit, as they got within 13 following a free throw by
Maeve Moriarty with 5:03 remaining in the period. The hosts would continue to add to their lead, up by 16 (53-37) with 10 minutes left in regulation. The fourth quarter was a mere formality, as the closest that Assumption would get would be 11 points (59-48) after a
Teagan Kamm layup, but the Yellow Jackets would hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final two minutes of the contest to hold on for a 68-53 final score.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- Thai Davis led the way for Assumption, as she poured in 12 points, while adding seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
- Teagan Kamm led the Greyhounds with 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting.
- American International outrebounded Assumption 36-35, while also forcing 23 turnovers.
- Assumption leads the all-time series 41-24
