Men's Ice Hockey tops Saint Michael's 5-1

WORCESTER, Mass.— The Assumption University men's ice hockey team scored four second-period goals en route to a 5-1 home win over Saint Michael's College, in Northeast 10 Conference action, Friday evening at the Worcester Ice Center.

THE BASICS:
Score: Assumption University 5, Saint Michael's College 1
Records: Greyhounds (15-7-2, 9-2-2 NE10) | Purple Knights (12-8-3, 7-4-2 NE10)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
In the first period, Assumption was the only team to get on the scoreboard, as Shane McElhaney lit the lamp at 14:03. The Greyhounds would break open the game in the middle frame, as Jake DiNapoli struck on the power play at the 3:21 marker. Two minutes later, DiNapoli struck again while short-handed, chasing Saint Michael's starter Evan Plunkett from the game. Jake Russell pushed the Hounds' advantage to 4-0, as he tipped in Jonathan Surrette's shot on the power play past the Purple Knights' netminder.

Saint Michael's eventually broke through at 16:18 of the second period, as Roman Winicki potted the loose puck, cutting the deficit down to 4-1. Just over a minute late, Thomas McGaffigan regained a four-goal margin. The game would head into the third period with Assumption leading 5-1, but the Purple Knights would outshoot the hosts 15-12 in the frame. Despite the late push by Saint Michael's, the Greyhounds would come away with a 5-1 final score.
