WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Assumption University volleyball team came out on top as the Greyhounds outlasted Saint Michael's College, 3-2, in the Northeast 10 Conference opener Saturday afternoon inside Andrew Laska Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption used a 4-0 run to turn a 7-7 tie into an 11-7 lead in the opening set. Saint Michael's battled back to tie the frame at 22-22, but
Brooke Bowbliss recorded back-to-back service aces to close out a 25-22 win.
Saint Michael's responded in the second, using a 7-1 run to take a 9-5 advantage.
Cate Wettstone and
Kaitlyn Montgomery combined for eight kills in the frame, but the Purple Knights pulled away for a 25-16 win.
The Greyhounds jumped ahead 9-4 following a 6-0 run in the third before Saint Michael's rallied to take a 24-21 lead. Assumption answered with three straight points, highlighted by a Montgomery block and
Natalie Brojek's ace. After the score reached 27-27,
Lily Petrocelli helped Assumption score the final two points to take the set, 29-27.
Assumption erased a 7-3 deficit in the fourth with five straight points, highlighted by consecutive
Lila Handrahan aces.
Makenna Glenn later served back-to-back aces to give the Greyhounds a 15-13 lead, but Saint Michael's rallied to 25-22 to force a fifth set.
The Greyhounds took immediate control of the fifth, scoring the first five points behind kills from Bowbliss,
Christine Mbachi, Petrocelli and Montgomery. Assumption hit .471 in the deciding frame and rolled to a 15-6 win to secure the 3-2 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Cate Wettstone set a new career-high with 14 kills, while Kaitlyn Montgomery (13) and Lily Petrocelli (12) both added double-digit kills.
- Brooke Bowbliss had a game-high 34 assists and added five aces and four kills.
- Makenna Glenn had a game-high 21 digs.
- The Greyhounds had ten blocks, which is the fifth time this season.
- Assumption had 15 service aces as a team, which are the most since the Hounds had 18 against Franklin Pierce on Oct. 3, 2024.
- Saint Michael's still leads the all-time series 30-16.
