HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the opening set before Pace responded with an 11-2 run to take a 13-7 advantage. The Greyhounds answered with seven straight points behind the serving of
Lila Handrahan, including an ace and kills from
Grace Presswood,
Brooke Bowbliss and
Cate Wettstone, to pull within two, 17-15. Pace regained control down the stretch to take the set, 25-18.
The Greyhounds used a 6-0 run in the second to turn a 7-7 tie into a 13-7 lead, with
Kaitlyn Montgomery recording two kills during the stretch. Assumption remained in front and held a 23-19 advantage before Pace rallied to tie the frame at 24-24. Wettstone put the Greyhounds ahead 27-26 with a kill, but the Setters scored the final three points to take the set, 29-27.
Assumption responded in the third, building an 11-6 advantage before Pace cut the lead to 14-13. The Greyhounds answered with a 7-1 run, highlighted by back-to-back Handrahan service aces and a Wettstone block, to extend the lead to 21-14. Assumption closed out the frame 25-17 to force a fourth set.
The Greyhounds carried the momentum into the fourth, using a 6-0 run highlighted by two
Makenna Glenn aces to take a 6-2 lead. Assumption later stretched its advantage to 20-14 following kills from
Nora Sharkey and
Allie Barton and a Handrahan ace. Pace rallied to tie the set at 24-24 before scoring the final two points to take the frame, 26-24, and the match, 3-1.
