WORCESTER, Mass -- The Assumption University volleyball team saw a few players have career nights as the Greyhounds recorded a thrilling five-set Northeast 10 Conference win over Saint Anselm College Saturday afternoon inside Andrew Laska Gymnasium on Senior Day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption opened the afternoon strong against Saint Anselm, taking the first set 25-18. The Greyhounds jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before the Hawks battled back to tie at 9-9. Assumption responded with a 6-1 run to regain control, eventually extending its lead to 20-13.
Lily Petrocelli closed out the opening set with a kill, giving the Greyhounds a 1-0 match lead.
Saint Anselm answered in the second set, building a 12-5 lead before pulling away for a 25-16 victory to even the match at one set apiece. The Greyhounds responded in the third, opening with a 3-0 run and gradually extending their advantage. Behind strong offensive contributions from
Kaitlyn Montgomery and
Cate Wettstone, Assumption pulled away for a 25-16 victory to take a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth set, Saint Anselm raced out to an early 6-1 lead, but Assumption refused to go away. Trailing 18-11, the Greyhounds rattled off five consecutive points behind the serving of
Grace Presswood to cut the deficit to two. Assumption continued its comeback, eventually tying the set at 23-23 on a Montgomery kill. After the Hawks reached set point, Montgomery delivered another kill to even the score at 24-24, but Saint Anselm secured the next two points to win 26-24 and force a decisive fifth set.
In the decisive fifth set, the two teams traded points early before Assumption used a service ace from
Makenna Glenn to take a 5-3 lead. After Saint Anselm tied the score at 8-8, the Greyhounds responded with kills from Petrocelli and Montgomery to build a 13-9 advantage. The Hawks pulled within two at 13-11, but Petrocelli delivered another kill before a Saint Anselm attack error sealed the 15-12 victory and the 3-2 match win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Montgomery led the Greyhounds with a match-high 19 kills while hitting .341, followed by Petrocelli with 11 kills and Allie Barton with 10.
- Natalie Brojek directed the offense with 48 assists, six kills, nine digs, and two service aces.
- Glenn anchored the defense with a match-high 27 digs and three aces, while Lila Handrahan added 14 digs.
- Brojek's 48 assists are the most by a Greyhound since Kyra Belden had 59 against Franklin Pierce on Nov. 13, 2021.
- Before the match, the Assumption Athletic Department honored three seniors on the Volleyball team: Grace Presswood, Allie Barton, and Brennah Abilheira-Cargill.
- Saint Anselm still leads the all-time series 40-21.
