WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Assumption University volleyball team fell in straight sets to Southern Connecticut State University, 3-0, in Northeast 10 Conference action Friday afternoon in Andrew Laska Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Southern Connecticut State jumped to a 3-0 lead in the opening set before Assumption responded with three straight points, including a
Grace Presswood kill and a combined block from
Brooke Bowbliss and
Kaitlyn Montgomery. The Owls answered with a 4-0 run to take an 8-4 lead, but the Greyhounds kept fighting. Kills from Bowbliss and Lilyanna Petrocelli brought Assumption within two at 8-6 before Southern Connecticut extended its advantage to 13-8. Montgomery recorded consecutive kills to keep the Greyhounds within striking distance, while
Makenna Glenn added a service ace to make it 19-14. However, the Owls scored the final six points to take the opening set, 25-14.
Southern Connecticut carried its momentum into the second set, scoring the first five points before extending its lead to 10-2. Assumption responded with a 3-0 run, featuring a Petrocelli kill and a Glenn service ace, to cut the deficit to 12-8. The Greyhounds kept chipping away, as Presswood recorded a kill and
Christine Mbachi and
Nora Sharkey combined for a block to make it 14-11. The Owls answered by stretching their advantage to 20-13. Petrocelli added another kill late in the frame, but Southern Connecticut closed out the second set, 25-15.
Assumption came out strong in the third set, taking an early 5-2 advantage behind a pair of Montgomery kills and a
Natalie Brojek service ace. The Owls responded with a 7-2 run to take a 9-7 lead before extending it to 14-10. The Greyhounds battled back, as Montgomery recorded a solo block and Glenn delivered a service ace to cut the deficit to 18-16. Southern Connecticut answered with consecutive points, but Assumption kept fighting, with kills from Sharkey and Presswood down the stretch. The Owls ultimately secured the third set, 25-18, to complete the 3-0 sweep.
