Women's Basketball clips SCSU, 54-48

WORCESTER, Mass.— The Assumption University women's basketball team extended their winning streak to four games, as the Greyhounds knocked off Southern Connecticut State University 54-48 in Northeast 10 Conference action, Tuesday evening inside Andrew Laska Gymnasium. 

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
In the first quarter, Assumption was the only team to find the bottom of the basket, as they began on a 9-0 run, before Jillian Martan had a driving layup with 2:49 to go, getting Southern Connecticut on the board. Morgan Johnson answered with a driving layup, giving the Greyhounds an 11-2 lead after 10 minutes. The Owls flipped the script in the second quarter, as they opened the quarter on an 8-0 run to get within one (11-10). The two teams would trade the next few points, where the Hounds would take a 17-16 advantage into the locker room. 
 
Tish Blackwood would give SCSU their first lead of the day with the opening bucket of the second half, but a Teagan Curran three-pointer would kick-start a 9-3 run, putting the hosts up 26-21 halfway through the frame. Southern would knock down four free throws down the stretch, and they would cut the deficit down to three points (28-25) with 10 minutes left in regulation. 
 
Assumption would open the fourth quarter hitting on all cylinders, shooting, as Emily Collins, Madison Handrahan, and Curran all connected from long range, extending the Greyhounds' margin to 12 points (39-27). The Owls would not go away quietly, as they went on an 18-10 run to get within four points (49-45), but the Hounds would knock down five free throws in the final minute to secure a 54-48 home win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Teagan Curran led all scorers with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting. 
  • Thai Davis nearly had a double-double with ten rebounds and nine assists, while adding six points, three steals, and three blocks. 
  • Assumption outrebounded Southern Connecticut State 40-35. 
  • The Greyhounds' defense held the Owls to a season-low 28.1 percent from the floor, the lowest since they were held to 17.5 percent against Saint Rose (Dec. 2, 2023). 
  • Assumption leads the all-time series 26-23.
