WORCESTER, Mass.— The Assumption University men's ice hockey team dropped their first game of 2026, as the Greyhounds fell to Saint Anselm College 5-2 in Northeast 10 Conference action, Saturday evening at the Worcester Ice Center.
THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Assumption was the first team to get on the scoreboard early in the first period, as
Jonathan Surrette scored his nation's leading 29
th goal off of a quick faceoff win by
Jake Russell at 7:58, while on the power play. Saint Anselm tied the game with a goal by Conor Kelly in the final minute of the frame. Kelly would strike again in the second period, as he scored while short-handed.
The Hawks would carry a 2-1 lead into the third period, where they scored two goals to go up 4-1, before
Kyle LoNigro lit the lamp for Assumption, cutting the deficit to two goals (4-2) with 5:10 to play in regulation. Saint Anselm would score a power play goal in the final minute to make the final score, 5-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Callum Welch had 48 saves in the loss.
- Saint Anselm outshot Assumption 53-39, while the Greyhounds won 35-of-58 faceoffs.
- Both sides went 1-for-6 on the power play.
- The loss to Saint Anselm snapped a 10-game winning streak and a 13-game unbeaten streak.
- This was the Greyhounds' first loss since Dec. 11, 2025, when they fell to Westfield State 5-4 in overtime.
- Saint Anselm still leads the all-time series 40-19-4
