WORCESTER, MASS.— The Assumption University women's ice hockey team had their four-game winning streak snapped, as the Greyhounds fell to Sacred Heart University, 4-3 in overtime, in New England Women's Hockey Alliance action, Friday evening at the Worcester Ice Center.
THE BASICS:
Score: Sacred Heart University 4, Assumption University 3 - OT
Records: Greyhounds (16-14-3, 16-8-3 NEWHA) | Pioneers (13-18-2, 12-13-2NEWHA)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Assumption was the first team to score, as
Lauryn Broecker netted the opening goal at 6:40 of the first period. Sacred Heart tied the game before the end of the first, as Alyssa Antonakis scored on the power play.
Rachel Agerter opened the second period with a goal in the opening minute, before
Caroline Lilley doubled the Greyhounds' advantage with her tally at the 5:51 marker. The Pioneers would respond before the end of the frame, as Kailey Smith got the visitors within one at 12:48.
The score would remain late into the third period, but with the goalie pulled and on a power play, Olivia Laroche tied the game with 2:55 showing on the game clock, forcing the game to go to overtime. With 1:27 left in overtime, Bria Holm scored the game-winning goal, giving Sacred Heart the 4-3 overtime win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Jadyn Weiser logged 27 saves in the loss.
- Assumption outshot Sacred Heart 42-31, while the Pioneers won 36-of-57 faceoffs.
- The Pios went 2-for-5 on the power play, while the Greyhounds were scoreless on both opportunities.
- Sacred Heart leads the all-time series 8-4-1
