WORCESTER, Mass.— The Assumption University women's ice hockey team is now one win away from advancing to the New England Women's Hockey Alliance Semifinals, as the Greyhounds topped Post University 2-1 in overtime, with
Jodie Gratton netting the game-winner, Friday afternoon at the Worcester Ice Center.
THE BASICS:
Score: Assumption University 2, Post University 1 - OT
Records: Greyhounds (18-14-3, 17-8-3 NEWHA) | Eagles (10-23-1, 10-17-1 NEWHA)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The game started slowly, with the two teams feeling each other out. Post was the first team to get on the board, as Georgia Stevens scored on the power play with a wrist shot from the slot. In the second period, neither team found the back of the net, but Assumption nearly found the equalizer, only for a goal to be disallowed due to a high-sticking call.
The Eagles would carry a 1-0 lead into the third period, but while on a 5-on-3 advantage,
Kaitlyn Cielo would net the game-tying goal at the 4:09 marker. The game would head to overtime, where
Jodie Gratton would net the game-winner with 2:48 showing on the clock.
Rachel Agerter forced a turnover in the offensive end of the ice, where she found
Alexa Hanrahan, who used a backhand pass over to Gratton, who tucked the puck inside the far post, winning the game for the Hounds.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Jadyn Weiser recorded 35 saves in the win.
- Assumption outshot Post 52-36, while also winning 31-of-57 faceoffs.
- Both teams scored on the power play, with the Greyhounds at 1-for-6 and the Eagles at 1-for-3.
- Kayla McGaffigan was strong defensively, as she blocked a team-high five shots, as the Hounds had the edge overall, 13-9.
- Assumption now leads the all-time series 7-4-2
