WORCESTER, Mass.— The Assumption University women's ice hockey team fell to Post University 2-1 in the New England Women's Hockey Alliance Quarterfinal matchup Saturday afternoon at the Worcester Ice Center, forcing a decisive game three.
THE BASICS:
Score: Assumption University 2, Post University 1 - OT
Records: Greyhounds (18-14-3, 17-8-3 NEWHA) | Eagles (10-23-1, 10-17-1 NEWHA)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Post was the first team to score, as Kai Hyatt opened the scoring at the 9:10 marker of the first period. The game would head into the second period with the Eagles leading, but they would double their advantage just before the nine-minute mark, as Caryss Kehl scored with a shot from the point that found its way past the Assumption netminder. The hosts would respond just under a minute later, as
Justina Valentini scored with a wrist shot from the point.
Mary McKiernan forced a turnover in the defensive end, and Valentini went coast-to-coast to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The game would head to the third period, with the visitors maintaining a slight edge. Assumption continued to fire away at the Post netminder, but even with the goalie pulled for the final 1:33 of regulation, the Greyhounds could not find the equalizer and would fall 2-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Jadyn Weiser logged 24 saves in the loss.
- Assumption outshot Post 37-26, while also winning 26-of-45 faceoffs.
- Neither side scored on the power play, as the Greyhounds were 0-for-2 and the Eagles were 0-for-1.
- Assumption still leads the all-time series 7-5-2
