Men's Lacrosse upends No. 17 SNHU, 11-6

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption University men's lacrosse team used strong defense and a big second quarter, as the Greyhounds upset No. 17 Southern New Hampshire University 11-6 in Northeast 10 Conference action, Tuesday afternoon at Brina Kelly '83 Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The game started as a defensive masterclass, with Southern New Hampshire the only team to score in the frame, while Shane Corcoran had six stops for Assumption and Matthew Roy had four for the Penmen. The Greyhounds saw their offense start to find momentum, as they got goals from Finnegan McKeon, Patrik McGrath, and Jacob Wilson to go up 3-1. Following an up-goal by SNHU, Nolan Johnson capped off the first half with his fifth goal of the season, sending the game to halftime with the hosts up 4-2. 
 
Coming out of the intermission, the Penmen had back-to-back tallies to tie the game at 4-4, before McGrath and McKeon combined to score three goals in 1:28 of game action, pushing the Assumption advantage to 7-4. Joey Gallo capped off the third quarter with a goal for SNHU, cutting the deficit to two goals (7-5), entering the final quarter. The Blue and White would slowly pull away in the final frame, as Nolan Johnson scored three goals in the opening six minutes of the stanza to go up 10-5. After a Southern New Hampshire goal at the 4:19 marker, Boomer Staunton capped off the game with a two-man up goal with 7.4 showing on the game clock, securing an 11-6 win over the nationally-ranked Southern New Hampshire. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Shane Corcoran recorded a season-high 18 saves in the win. 
  • Nolan Johnson had a game-high four goals, while Finnegan McKeon tallied three goals. 
  • Connor Stack dominated the faceoff dot, as he won 14-of-18 faceoffs, while also picking up 12 ground balls. 
  • Assumption outshot Southern New Hampshire 45-34, while also winning 15-of-19 faceoffs. 
  • The Greyhounds went 3-for-7 on the man-advantage, while the Penmen were 1-for-5. 
  • SNHU now leads the all-time series 18-10.
