WALTHAM, Mass. – Assumption University sophomore
Ben McHugh scored 49 seconds into overtime, as the No. 18 nationally ranked men's lacrosse team defeated No. 20 Bentley University, 12-11, in Northeast 10 Conference action, Tuesday evening, to lock up a home playoff game for the Greyhounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Bentley was the first team to score, as Nick Berglund scored just under the two-minute mark of the opening quarter. Assumption responded with three straight tallies, with goals coming from
Ben McHugh,
Cole Rodgers, and
Boomer Staunton, giving the Greyhounds a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes of action. The Falcons tied the game in the second quarter, as they netted the first two goals of the frame, but McHugh regained the lead for the Hounds before the intermission.
Coming out of the break, Assumption scored back-to-back goals, with
Patrik McGrath and
Jacob Wilson netting the tallies to go up 6-3. After a quick strike by the Falcons,
Boomer Staunton netted his second goal of the game, to go up 7-4. The hosts would not go away quietly, as they scored three unanswered goals to tie the game at 7-7. Staunton regained the lead for Assumption, but a quick answer by Brady Glass tied the game at 8-8 to head to the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the two teams traded goals, but with Bentley leading 11-10 in the final minute, Staunton beat his man to tie the game at 11-11 with 20 seconds left in regulation, forcing overtime. In the extra session,
Connor Stack opened up the frame with a face-off win, but it would be
Ben McHugh who would score the game-winner 49 seconds into the overtime period.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Shane Corcoran recorded 14 saves in the win for the Greyhounds.
- Assumption outshot Bentley 46-43, while also winning 14-of-26 faceoffs.
- Boomer Staunton had a game-high five goals and six points, while Ben McHugh and Jacob Wilson had two goals apiece.
- Both teams were nearly perfect on clearing attempts, as the Falcons were 23-for-24 and the Greyhounds were 22-of-24.
- With his third goal of the game, Boomer Staunton surpassed Justin Cecil, who scored 47 during the 1995 campaign.
- The Falcons still lead the all-time series 29-7.
