Surrette and McElhaney selected as New England All-Stars

4/3/2026 11:06:00 AM

BOSTON, Mass. – Assumption University men's ice hockey student-athletes Jonathan Surrette and Shane McElhaney have been honored by the New England Hockey Writers Association, which is headlined by Surrette earning the Most Valuable Player award, as announced Friday afternoon.

The New England Hockey Writers Association will host its annual awards brunch on Sunday, April 19, at the Prince Restaurant in Saugus, MA. The event will include not only the New England Writers' honorees but also the presentation of the recipients of the Walter Brown Award and the Joe Concannon Award, given by the Gridiron Club of New England to the top American-born male hockey players in New England. In addition, the Eastern Massachusetts Ice Hockey Officials will present the J. Thom Lawler Award.

Surrette and McElhaney were both named as New England Division II-III Men's All-Stars.

Surrette, a junior forward from Woburn, Massachusetts, led his team to the NE10 regular season and conference tournament titles. During the season, he played in 33 games, scoring 34 goals and adding 31assists for a conference-record 65 points, while posting a +29 rating with the Greyhounds. Surrette earned Player of the Year and 1st-team All-NE10 honors while becoming just the second D-II player to receive the Joe Concannon Award, and the first since 2010. He was also a finalist for the 2025-26 Sid Watson Division II/III National Player of the Year Award.

McElhaney led all NE10 defensemen this season in goals (10), assists (20), and points (30), while tying for second in blocked shots (46), on his way to earning Defensive Player of the Year. He joined Surrette as a semifinalist for the Joe Concannon Award early in February, which honors the best American-born NCAA Division II/III hockey player in New England.

The 20 New England All-Stars come from 14 different schools, with Endicott College leading the way with three honorees, followed by Assumption University, Babson College, and Bowdoin College, each with a pair. The Division II-III New England Men's MVP and the Joe Concannon Award winner is junior forward Jonathan Surrette (Woburn, Mass.) of Assumption University. The EMIHOA J. Thom Lawler Award goes to Brendan Fennell (Melrose, Mass.), a senior forward at Tufts University, and the Division II-III New England Men's Co-Coaches of the Year are Dave McCauley of Anna Maria College and Jamie Rice of Babson College.

The afternoon will end with the presentation of the Parker-York Award for Contribution to New England Hockey. This year's recipient is longtime Amherst College men's head coach Jack Arena
