Field Hockey falls to No. 2 Kutztown

WORCESTER, Mass.– The No. 8 nationally ranked Assumption University field hockey team dropped a 6-0 decision to No. 2 Kutztown University on a rainy Sunday at Brian Kelly '83 Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption generated several quality opportunities midway through the opening quarter, earning three consecutive penalty corners beginning at 9:51. Ella Holtman forced a save before Caroline Mastergeorge had an attempt cleared away with a defensive save. Kutztown responded late in the period, as Julia Traynor scored at 12:48 to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 advantage. 

Kutztown broke the game open early in the second quarter, scoring three times in less than two minutes. Traynor recorded her second of the afternoon at 18:54 before Ellie Myers scored 31 seconds later. Marissa Rice followed at 20:39 to push the Golden Bears' advantage to 4-0. Assumption continued to create chances, getting shots on goal from Elly Schofer and Mastergeorge, but Kutztown added a penalty-stroke goal from Olivia Kirkpatrick at 26:13 to take a 5-0 lead into halftime. 

The Golden Bears added their final goal at 33:51 when Anna Harris scored off an assist from Rice. Assumption answered with sustained pressure later in the third, earning three penalty corners in a 31-second span. Khianna Jackson and Kelsey McCleary each put shots on goal during the stretch, but Kutztown kept the Greyhounds off the board. 

Assumption continued to attack in the fourth quarter, opening the period with back-to-back penalty corners before Nova Rijks, Marta Brzoska and Schofer each forced saves. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Abbie Derosier recorded a career-high 13 saves in the loss. 
  • Kutztown outshot Assumption 27-15, while also maintaining a 14-10 advantage in penalty corners. 
  • The Greyhounds recorded 10 shots on goal, the most allowed by the Kutztown defense since Millersville had 10 on October 26, 2022.
  • Assumption's 10 penalty corners were also the most allowed by the Golden Bears since October 22, 2022.
  • Kutztown now leads in the all-time series 7-1.
