MANCHESTER, N.H. -- The Assumption University volleyball team dropped a tight, back-and-forth match at Saint Anselm College, 3-1 in non-conference action Tuesday evening in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption and Saint Anselm went back-and-forth throughout the opening set, which featured 14 ties and eight lead changes. The Greyhounds trailed 23-21 late before a kill from
Cate Wettstone, an ace from
Brennah Abilheira-Cargill, and a kill from
Marguerita Sharkey put Assumption ahead, 24-23. After the Hawks tied it at 24, Wettstone delivered another kill before Assumption closed out the set, 26-24.
The Greyhounds carried the momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 7-3 advantage behind a pair of aces from
Christine Mbachi and a kill from Wettstone. Assumption remained in front for much of the frame and held an 18-16 edge following a Saint Anselm setting error. The Hawks responded down the stretch, using a 7-1 run to take a 23-19 lead before eventually evening the match with a 25-21 win.
Assumption opened the third set with a 6-1 run, highlighted by three service aces from Abilheira-Cargil
l and a kill from Mbachi. Saint Anselm answered to take a 7-6 lead, but the Greyhounds battled back and took the lead 16-14 after a Wettstone kill. The Hawks responded with five straight points to regain control at 19-16 and went on to take the set, 25-20.
Saint Anselm jumped out to a 5-1 advantage in the fourth, but Assumption chipped away and eventually used a 7-1 run to turn a 10-7 deficit into a 14-12 lead. The run featured a kill and an ace from
Brooke Bowbliss, along with blocks by
Lily Petrocelli, Mbachi, and Bowbliss. The Hawks answered with a late run of their own and pulled away for a 25-18 victory, securing the match in four sets.
