BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Assumption University volleyball team won the first set, but then would drop the next three sets to D'Youville University, 3-1 in non-conference action, Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption came out strong in the opening set, turning an early 3-3 tie into a 7-3 advantage behind a pair of kills from
Kaitlyn Montgomery, a kill from
Allie Barton, and a Montgomery block. The Greyhounds maintained control throughout the frame, stretching their lead to 17-10 following a
Grace Presswood service ace. D'Youville cut the deficit to three at 20-17, but Assumption answered and closed out the set on a
Nora Sharkey kill for a 25-21 victory.
D'Youville responded in the second set, jumping out to a 10-2 advantage. Assumption used a four-point run highlighted by a
Makenna Glenn service ace to cut the deficit to 11-8, but the Saints answered with six straight points to regain control. D'Youville went on to take the frame, 25-13, evening the match at one set apiece.
The Greyhounds stayed within striking distance early in the third, pulling within one at 8-7 after kills from
Presswood and
Cate Wettstone and another Glenn ace. Assumption later trailed just 15-13 before D'Youville rattled off eight consecutive points to take command. The Saints eventually secured the set, 25-16, to take a 2-1 lead.
Assumption opened the fourth with five unanswered points, capped by a Glenn service ace and a Presswood kill. D'Youville worked its way back, but the teams remained locked in a back-and-forth battle that featured 10 ties and five lead changes. The Greyhounds held an 18-17 advantage following a
Brooke Bowbliss kill and later tied the frame at 19-19 on another Montgomery kill. The Saints, however, scored six of the final seven points to take the set, 25-20, and the match, 3-1.
