WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Assumption University volleyball team fell in straight sets to Franklin Pierce University in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday evening, inside Andrew Laska Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Franklin Pierce jumped out to a 6-0 advantage in the opening set before Assumption began to settle in. The Greyhounds later used a 7-1 run behind kills from Lilyanna Petrocelli and
Christine Mbachi, a Petrocelli block and a
Makenna Glenn service ace to cut the deficit to 19-15. Franklin Pierce responded, however, closing the frame with six of the final seven points to take the opener, 25-16.
Assumption battled throughout the second set, overcoming an early 6-2 deficit to pull even at 8-8. After Franklin Pierce moved back in front, the Greyhounds mounted another rally, as kills from
Brooke Bowbliss, Mbachi and
Cate Wettstone helped Assumption climb back within striking distance. Mbachi then recorded an ace before
Kaitlyn Montgomery's block tied the set at 16-16. Assumption remained within two at 20-18 and later got kills from Montgomery and Petrocelli, but the Ravens held on for a 25-21 win.
The Greyhounds and Ravens traded points throughout the early stages of the third, with the set featuring nine ties and two lead changes. Assumption pulled even at 10-10 and remained within two at 15-13 following a Petrocelli kill. Franklin Pierce answered with a 4-0 run to create separation, but the Greyhounds continued to battle, getting kills from Petrocelli,
Allie Barton and Mbachi before Montgomery's block fought off match point. The Ravens secured the next point to take the set, 25-18, and the match, 3-0.
