Worcester, Mass. (March 19) -- The Assumption men's lacrosse team remained perfect on the season with a dominant 13-1 victory over Pace University on Saturday afternoon in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams. This is the first five-game winning streak for the Greyhounds since the 1983 season and the second-longest streak in program history.
Senior captain Nicholas Violandi (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) got things started for the Hounds with 6:30 left in the first quarter as he notched an unassisted goal for the 1-0 lead. Violandi led the Greyhounds with a four-goal performance. Junior Tim Roy (Avon, Conn./Avon) scored to make it 2-0 after one quarter and the two traded goals in the beginning of the second quarter to make it 4-0 in favor of Assumption. Leading 8-0 at the halftime break, the Greyhounds blew things open in the fourth with a four-goal period, including a man-up goal from senior captain Will Langevin (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle). Langevin, along with Roy, each finished the game with a hat trick.
After Violandi scored to start the fourth quarter, Pace got on the board with 10:26 left in the game on a man-up goal from William Scioscia. Roy added his third goal of the game for the Greyhounds with 7:12 left to account for the 13-1 final.
Assumption outshot the Setters by a 35-27 final and converted on two of three man-up opportunities.
Senior Scott Vogel (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy-Liberty) made 14 saves in the victory, while Kevin Grady made three saves to get the loss.
With the win, the Greyhounds are a perfect 5-0 overall and 1-0 in Northeast-10 play, while the Setters fall to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the league. The Greyhounds are back in action on Tuesday, March 22nd as the team travels to Molloy for a non-conference game beginning at 7 p.m.
