Worcester, Mass. (March 30) -- On Wednesday night under the lights at Multi-Sport Stadium, the Assumption men's lacrosse team dropped an 8-4 final to visiting Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference action. The Falcons are receiving votes in this week's USILA Division II National Top-10 poll.
Assumption jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 2:16 into the first quarter as Alejandro Ruiz (Dover, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) tallied a man-up goal for the Greyhounds off an assist from John Murphy (Walpole, Mass./Bridgton Academy). With the Greyhounds leading 1-0 after the first period, Bentley took a 2-1 lead into the halftime break with even-strength goals from Matt Boilard and Brendan Grant in the second period. The goals came within a 48-second span midway thru the quarter.
Bentley pushed the lead up to 4-1 midway thru the third quarter before the Greyhounds answered on an unassisted goal from Ruiz to cut the lead to 4-2 with 5:48 left in the period. After the Falcons made it a four-goal margin at 6-2 with two goals in 1:14, Murphy closed out the third-quarter scoring with 1:12 left for a 6-3 margin after three periods.
Assumption jumped on the scoreboard first in the fourth quarter as senior Will Langevin (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle), the team's leading scorer, took a pass from Connor MacNeil (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) and scored his first goal of the game to cut the lead down to 6-4. The Falcons didn't allow the Greyhounds to pull any closer though as Dante Mancini and Grant closed out the scoring with a pair of Bentley goals in the final minutes for the 8-4 final.
Assumption senior goalie Scott Vogel (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy-Liberty) made 12 saves in the defeat, while Bentley netminder Mike O'Neil turned aside 15 shots while picking up the victory.
With the loss, the Greyhounds fall to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the Northeast-10, while Bentley improves to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in league play. Assumption is back in action on Saturday afternoon as the Greyhounds host No. 2 ranked Le Moyne College for a Noon start.
