Worcester, Mass. -- After one pitch cost them game one against the Warriors of Merrimack, the Assumption College softball team left nothing to chance in game two. The Greyhounds split their games in the home double-header against Merrimack College, losing the first game 2-1 before rebounding for an impressive 8-2 win in the second game.

In game one, Assumption junior pitcher Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) was tremendous for five innings before giving up a two-run home run to junior second baseman Monique Gosselin (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic) in the top of the sixth inning. Lowrey finished with thirteen strikeouts, but Merrimack sophomore pitcher Alie Thomas (Bedford, N.H./Trinity) needed only one strikeout to hold Assumption to one run.

In game two, the Greyhounds scored three runs in the bottom of the first and never trailed. Senior shortstop Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) had three RBI, two of them off a single in that first inning. Freshman center fielder Tanya Robidoux (Hookset, N.H./Manchester Central) went two for three and scored two runs. Junior pitcher Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem) and Lowrey combined to strike out 15 Warriors.

With the split, Assumption is now 17-12 with an 11-5 conference record, remaining tied for second with Merrimack. The Greyhounds host UMass Lowell on Sunday.
