Colchester, Vt. (May 3) -- The most successful season in Assumption men's lacrosse history came to an end on Tuesday afternoon as the Greyhounds dropped a 15-8 final to No. 10 ranked Saint Michael's in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament Quarterfinals. The Hounds end the season at 9-7 overall, setting the program's single-season record for victories.
The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the first on an even-strength goal from Connor MacNeil (Wayland, Mass./Wayland), but the Purple Knights answered and took a 2-1 edge late in the period. Assumption sent the game into the second quarter tied at 2-2 though as John Murphy (Walpole, Mass./Bridgton) found the back of the net with 4:25 on the clock.
In the second, the teams traded goals as Nicholas Violandi (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) scored for Assumption, followed by the second goal of the game from Pete Donnally for Saint Michael's. Tim Roy (Avon, Conn./Avon) gave the Greyhounds their final lead of the game with 5:24 left in the first half before the Purple Knights closed out the half on a 3-0 run for the 6-4 edge at the break.
The Purple Knights opened the second half on a four-goal run to jump out to a 10-4 lead and had control for the remainder of the contest to pick up their 10th victory of the season.
MacNeil led the Hounds with three goals, along with two scores from Violandi and three assists from senior Will Langevin (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle). Senior goalie Scott Vogel (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy-Liberty) turned aside 10 shots in the defeat.
