Box Score Lowell, Mass. (October 18) -- On Thursday evening, the Assumption College field hockey team dropped a 3-0 road final to No. 5 ranked UMass Lowell in non-conference action. The River Hawks earned the sweep of the regular-season series with the victory.
The River Hawks got on the board with just 44 seconds left in the first half as Rachel McCarthy scored her team-leading 21st goal of the season for the 1-0 halftime lead.
McCarthy tied for the league lead in goals just 2:25 into the second half as she extended the Lowell lead to 2-0 with her 22nd goal of the year. Vanessa Kent added a goal just 3:17 later, her fourth of the season, to account for the 3-0 final.
Junior Heather Philbrick (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) made 17 saves in the loss for the Hounds, while River Hawk goalie Melanie Hopkins turned aside two shots in the victory.
Assumption drops to 7-10 overall with the loss, while the River Hawks improve to 14-3 overall heading into the field weekend of play.
Assumption closes out the 2012 regular season on Saturday, October 20th as the Hounds host Franklin Pierce for a Noon start at the Multi-Sport Stadium. Prior to the game, the Department of Athletics will recognize seniors Britt Allen (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln), Jess MacDonald and Kathy Moffett (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) for their contributions to the field hockey program during their careers.
