Box Score Worcester, Mass. (September 12) -- The Assumption College women's soccer team defeated New Haven, 3-1, at the Multi-Sport Stadium on Wednesday night. New Haven was receiving votes in the national poll last week.
Junior Andrea Bates (Holden, Mass./Wachusett) had a hand in all three Assumption goals, finishing with a goal and two assists for four points on the night.
The Greyhounds pulled ahead 1-0 in the fourth minute of the match as Bates fed a through ball to senior Elizabeth Blasser (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke), who beat the New Haven keeper for her first goal of the season.
New Haven equalized at the 19:23 mark as Monica Yanez scored an unassisted goal.
Assumption answered back with a goal of their own at 23:08, as Andrea Bates found the back of the net off a corner kick. Senior Molly Kessler (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) took the corner and passed the ball to Kristin Bateas (West Hartford, Conn./William Hall), who crossed the ball to Bates for the score.
Kessler also had a hand in the third goal, as the took the ball up the right side and crossed it again to Bates who had a nice one-touch to freshman Caroline Kozlowski (Uncasville, Conn./Pomfret). Kozlowski took the pass and lobbed a shot over the New Haven keeper to extend the lead to two at the 71:20 mark in the game.
Kessler took a team-high five shots, but finished with just the two assists after she hit the post on two deep shots.
The Greyhounds improve to 1-3 with the win and 1-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while Assumption hands New Haven its first loss, dropping the Chargers to 4-1 overall with a 1-1 mark in league play. This is the second year in a row the Greyhounds have beat New Haven, as Assumption defeated the Chargers 2-0 in their only meeting last season.
Assumption will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 15 as the Greyhounds face off against Saint Michael's College. The game will begin at 4:00 p.m. at the Multi-Sport Stadium in Worcester, Mass.
