Worcester, Mass. (September 22) -- Assumption saw its five-game unbeaten streak come to an end Saturday afternoon at Multi-Sport Stadium as the No. 4 ranked UMass Lowell River Hawks defeated the Greyhounds by a final score of 4-1. The Greyhounds fall to 4-5-1 (3-1 NE-10) on the season, while the River Hawks improve to 7-1 (2-0 NE-10).

Assumption came out firing and just 1:15 into the first half, sophomore Maria Beatrice (West Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) beat the keeper to the low right of the net for her sixth goal of the season, which gave the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead. The lead was short lived as the River Hawks tied the game up when Bianca Jones scrambled across the front of the net and was able to sneak a shot past Greyhound goalie Lauren Neilan (Mendon, Mass./Nipmuc Regional).

UMass Lowell would strike again only a minute and half later as senior Sarah Wilcox rocketed home a shot to give the River Hawks a 2-1 lead. The goal was Wilcox's fourth of the season and was assisted by Emily Painten.

The River Hawks were the team that came out hard in the second half and with 47 seconds gone, Melissa Effertz scored off a penalty corner as she put the shot just inside the right post to make it a 3-1 game. The River Hawks capped off the scoring in the 38th minute as senior Vanessa Kent tipped home a shot by Melissa Effertz which beat Neilan to the low right corner of the net and gave the River Hawks a 4-1 lead.

Neilan made 13 saves in the loss, while Melanie Hopkins turned aside one shot in the win. The River Hawks outshot the Greyhounds 26-3 and won the corner advantage 18-0.

With today's goal, thus far in 2012, Assumption has equaled the goal scoring from the last two seasons combined. In addition, all 20 goals have come off the sticks of either freshmen or sophomores.

Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, September 26th as the Hounds travel to Stonehill College for a 1 p.m. start against the Skyhawks.
