Worcester, Mass. (October 30) -- Senior Andrea Bates (Holden, Mass. / Wachusett) scored two goals as the Greyhounds clinched a Northeast-10 Conference playoff spot with a 3-0 win over Southern Connecticut State University at the Multi-Sport Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Prior to the game, the Greyhounds honored their senior class of Bates, Allison Bruder (Sandy, Utah / Juan Diego Catholic), and Justine DiDonato (Eastchester, N.Y. / Eastchester).
Sophomore Paige Radomski (Kingston, Mass. / Silver Lake) gave the Greyhounds a 1-0 edge, converting a free kick that rattled off the cross bar before bouncing in at the 21:12 mark in the first half.
Junior Rachel Edgin (Whitesboro, N.Y. / Whitesboro) kept the Greyhounds up one, making a terrific save on an attack by Hannah Spreckley.
Spreckley took a ball that trickled by the Greyhound defense and attempted to beat Edgin to her right, but the junior goalkeeper dove to prevent the attempt.
Bates extended the lead to two in the 54th minute as the senior took a pass in the middle of the field and ripped a shot to the upper left hand corner of the net for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Bates added her seventh goal of the season in the 88th minute on a ball that trickled past the Owl goalkeeper and had a chance for her first career hat trick before pushing the ball just wide right less than a minute later.
Bruder and Edgin combined for a shutout, making three combined saves. Bruder got the start for the Greyhounds, working the first 13:20 while making one save before giving way to the junior, Edgin, who made two saves the rest of the way.
The Greyhounds improve to 7-3-5 on the season with the win and improve to 5-3-5 in Northeast-10 Conference play while the Owls fall to 6-9-2 with the loss and are now 5-7-2 in the league.
