Salem, N.H. (November 3) -- The Assumption College ice hockey team dropped a 3-1 final to the Suffolk University Rams in the season opener at the Salem Ice Center on Sunday evening.
After Suffolk jumped ahead in the first period with a power play goal, senior Nick Mattiello (Johnston, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) scored the lone goal for the Greyhounds. The senior forward leveled the score on a power play goal assisted by sophomore Alex Erban (Attleboro, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles).
The Rams scored twice in the third period to take the season opener for both teams.
Senior Bobby Bowden (Springfield, Mass. / Williston-Northampton) made 37 saves in his first start of the season while Brandon Smolarek made 20 saves to earn his first win of the season for Suffolk.
The Greyhounds fall to 0-1 on the season with the loss while Suffolk improves to 1-0 with the win. The Greyhounds are back in action on Tuesday, November 5th at Westfield State. The game will begin at 7:35 p.m. in Westfield, Mass.
