Box Score Worcester, Mass. (February 23) -- The Assumption College men's lacrosse team kicked off the 2013 season with a 12-5 loss to Mercy College at the Multi-Sport Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Ty Martina (Marshfield, Mass. / Marshfield) scored two goals for the Greyhounds, as Ian Mack (Avon, Conn. / Avon), Paul Curran (Wading River, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River), and Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y. / East Syracuse Minoa) each recorded a goal in the loss.
Trailing 2-0 in the first quarter, The Greyhounds rattled off three-straight goals to take a 3-2 lead with 1:37 to play in the quarter. Curran got the go-ahead goal off an assist by Martina.
Mercy answered with a goal less than a minute later, the first of eight-consecutive goals as the Mavericks held the Greyhounds scoreless in the second and third periods on the way to building a 10-3 lead.
The Greyhounds mounted a slight comeback as Martina and Mack scored back-to-back fourth quarter goals to cut the Mercy lead to five, 10-5, before the Mavericks scored the final two goals of the game.
The Mavericks outshot the Greyhounds, 45-22, and won the ground ball battle, 42-40. Mercy also capitalized on four-of-seven extra man opportunities in the win.
The Greyhounds fall to 0-1 on the season with the loss, as Mercy improves to 2-0. Assumption will return to action on Saturday, March 2 against Le Moyne College. The game will begin at noon at the Multi-Sport Stadium in Worcester, Mass.
