Manchester, N.H. (March 16) -- Assumption was tied at 4-4 at the half with Southern New Hampshire before the Penmen used five unanswered goals to jump ahead 9-4 as the Hounds dropped an eventual 10-7 final on Saturday afternoon at Larkin Field.
SNHU took a 2-1 lead in the first quarter as Assumption's Peter Gersbeck (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) found the net for the Hounds. The Penmen stretched the lead out to 4-2 in the second period before Ian Mack (Avon, Conn./Avon) and Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) scored in the final 2:58 to tie things up at 4-4 at the break.
The Penmen came out firing in the third quarter to take an 8-4 lead after three periods and eventually made it a 5-0 run before the Hounds cut the lead down to 9-5. Trailing 10-5 entering the final minute of the fourth quarter, Smith scored twice in a 25-second period to account for the 10-7 final.
Smith tallied a hat trick in the loss, along with a pair of goals from Gersbeck. Sophomore goalie Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) made 13 saves in the loss. For the Penmen, goalies Morgan Weirteter and Crosby Nicholson combined for 13 saves in the victory.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, March 23rd as the Hounds return to Manchester, New Hampshire to take on Saint Anselm College for a 3 p.m. start.
