Box Score Worcester, Mass. (September 21) -- The Assumption College men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 final to Merrimack College at the Multi-Sport Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds battled back from a 3-0 deficit, but could not final the equalizer in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday.
The Greyhounds fell behind as Merrimack struck for three goals in the first 21 minutes of action, capped by a goal by Merrimack sophomore Augusto Silva, who struck from about 30 yards out.
Assumption had a chance to get on the board with a free kick by senior Jose Paulo (Sao Paulo, Brazil / LaSalle Academy), but the attempt sailed wide. The Greyhounds got on the board on another set piece with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half.
Senior Michael Agbortoko (Buea, Cameroon / Glastonbury) headed home a corner set up by junior Matt Flynn (East Falmouth, Mass. / Falmouth) in the 40th minute.
The Greyhounds converted another Flynn corner into a goal to cut the lead to one, 3-2, as senior Max Roche (Medway, Mass. / Medway) put away a corner, giving Flynn his second assist of the day.
Assumption continued to put the pressure on for the remainder of the second half, as the Greyhounds controlled play, but could not put away the game-tying goal.
The Greyhounds fall to 2-2-1 on the season with the loss and are now 0-2-1 in league play while Merrimack improves to 5-0-1 overall and 3-0-0 in league play.
The Greyhounds are back in action on Tuesday, September 25th as Assumption will face the Yellow Jackets of American International College in a 7 p.m. start.
