Brookville, N.Y. (January 4) -- Coming off a 14-day holiday layoff, the Assumption College women's basketball team dropped an 86-64 final to LIU Post on Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Recreation Center.
Assumption jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, capped by a layup from junior Caitlin Ackerman (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South). With the Hounds continuing to lead 14-11 at the 12:25 mark after a pair of free throws from freshman Johanna Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) before the Pioneers went on a 13-6 run and jumped out to a 24-20 edge. Sophomore Kelly Conley (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) cut the lead down to one at 36-35 on a layup with 13 seconds left in the first before a late LIU Post basket sent the game into the half at 38-35 in favor of the Pioneers.
In the second half, a 9-2 run over the first 2:07 extended the lead into double figures for the first time and forced an Assumption timeout. Over the remainder of the game, the Pioneers led by at least eight and as many as 30 as the Hounds dropped their first non-conference game of the season.
Senior Tafanie Roye (New Britain, Conn./Capital Prep Magnet) led the Hounds with 25 points, along with a career-high 20 points for Impellizeri. Four LIU Post starters finished in double figures, led by a 23-point effort from Shayna Gatling.
With the loss, Assumption falls to 7-5 overall, while LIU Post improves to 6-4 on the season.
Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, January 8th as the Hounds travel to the College of Saint Rose for a Northeast-10 Conference game beginning at 5:30 p.m.
