Women's Soccer Falls to #5 Saint Rose in OT

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. (October 15) -- The Assumption College women's soccer team fell to the #5 team in the nation, Saint Rose, on Wednesday night by a score of 1-0 in overtime. Senior Rachel Edgin (Whitesboro, N.Y. / Whitesboro) tallied eight saves on the match to keep the Hounds alive throughout 90 minutes of play.

With the loss, the Hounds drop to 8-3 on the season, 7-2 in the NE-10, while Saint Rose improves to 11-1-1, 7-1-1 in the league.

The squads opened the match in a back-and-fourth contest for ball possession on Wednesday night, neither team able to gain the edge throughout the first period.

Approximately 14 minutes into the first half, the Hounds nearly scored when a placed kick made its way into the middle of the box, just in front of the goal. Sophomore Emily Hill (Dedham, Mass. / Dedham) sent a header toward the top of the net, but it was a narrow miss, landing just over the cross bar and keeping the board scoreless.

The Hounds were outshot by the Golden Knights 11-8 in the first half and posted one corner kick to Saint Rose's two.

In the second half, Saint Rose came out of the locker room demonstrating a strong offensive showing, posting 12 total shots while earning seven corner kicks. The Hounds were, however, able to keep the Golden Knights at bay thanks to several impressive ball-saving maneuvers from Edgin.

Despite a 23-12 edge in shots and a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks by Saint Rose, the Hound defense was able to render the Golden Knights scoreless after 90 minutes to force the overtime.

Saint Rose notched its 10th corner kick of the match just 41 seconds into the overtime period to set up the game-winner. The Golden Knights' Morgan Burchhardt took the ball out at the corner, kicking it into the box where Emily Benjamin waited for a rebound. She finished with a well-placed short kick into the top right corner of the goal to clinch the victory for Saint Rose.

The Hound offense was led by reining NE-10 Rookie of the Week Amanda Arnold (Dayton, Maine / Thornton Academy) who posted six shots, three on goal. Also helping lead the offensive front was junior Paige Radomski (Kingston, Mass. / Silver Lake Regional), who tallied four shots, one on goal.

Assumption is set to return to action on Saturday, Oct. 18, as they host Bentley at the Assumption College Multi-Sport Stadium at 1 p.m.
