Marlborough, Mass. (November 28) -- After nearly 30 minutes of scoreless play, the Assumption College men's ice hockey team ultimately fell to Nichols College on Friday by a score of 4-2 in the first round of the Worcester City Cup. The Hounds were led by sophomores Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J. / Wayne Valley) and Paul Amarone (Hamden, Conn. / Trinity-Pauling) who scored each of Assumption's goals on the day.
The Greyhound defense held up in the first period, shutting out the Bison until Nichols' Joe Sposit earned the advantage in the ninth minute of the second period. The Hounds responded less than two minutes later, however, when Gomez netted his third goal of the 2014-15 season to equalize the score. Gomez' goal was assisted by junior Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Mass. / Northfield Mount Hermon), marking his fifth point, second assist, of the season.
The Bison took the lead again just over four minutes later when Kyle Shaprio found his way past Assumption keeper Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Mass. / Archbishop Williams High School) for the go-ahead goal.
Four and a half minutes into the third period, Nichols' Shane Totten got the Bison out to a two-goal lead before the Hounds' Amarone, assisted by freshman Matt Cowles (Farmington, Conn. / Avon Old Farms), brought Assumption back within one with just less than four minutes to play in regulation.
It wasn't until the last 35 seconds that the Bison found the back of the net one last time on a power play to take the 4-2 final.
The Bison outshot the Hounds 42-30 overall, while Commesso racked up 38 saves between the pipes. Bison keeper Pat Salkind totaled just 28 saves in comparison.
With the loss, Assumption falls to 1-7 overall while the Bison improve to 6-1-1 on the season.
The Greyhounds return to action on Sunday, Nov. 30, as they compete in the consolation game of the Worcester City Cup.
