Waltham, Mass. (April 12) -- On Saturday afternoon, the Assumption College men's lacrosse team dropped an 8-7 overtime final at Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference action. Senior Ian Mack (Avon, Conn./Avon) scored with one second left in regulation to send the game into the extra period, the first overtime game of the season for the Hounds.
Junior Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) put the Hounds up 1-0 just 3:03 into the first before David Phelps tied the game for Bentley with 2:04 remaining in the opening period. Smith made it a 2-1 margin heading into the second with his 38th goal of the season with just 17 seconds left in the first. The goal was assisted on by Mack, marking his team-leading 16th assist of the season. The momentum continued for Assumption in the second quarter as juniors Peter Gersbeck (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and Ty Martina (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) each notched unassisted goals for the 4-1 halftime edge.
In the third, Gersbeck stretched the lead to 5-1 before two goals by Bentley's Matt Dente made it a 5-3 score heading to the final quarter. Dente made it a two-goal game with just six seconds left in the quarter as three of the four quarters featured a goal scored within the final 20 seconds of the period.
After the fourth began with eight scoreless minutes, Bentley went on a 3-0 run to take its first lead of the game at 6-5 with 4:42 remaining. Cutler Dimond put the Falcons ahead for the first time with the unassisted score, which would end up being one of his two goals in the game. Gersbeck completed his hat trick with 2:49 left to tie the game, but Phelps again answered just 36 seconds later for the 7-6 lead.
Bentley appeared to be poised for the one-goal win in regulation before Mack scored with one second remaining to send the game to overtime tied at 7-7. Assumption set up the game-tying goal with under a minute left as junior Kerry Craig (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) forced a turnover by Bentley's Dente and called timeout with 21 seconds on the clock.
The Falcons won the opening faceoff in the overtime period as Dimond scored his second goal of the game and 18th of the season just 34 seconds into the extra session to cap off the 8-7 victory.
Gersbeck led the Hounds with three goals, along with two by Smith as he ended the contest with 97 goals for his career.
Junior Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) made 15 saves in the loss, while Josh Baker made 12 stops in the win for the Falcons.
Bentley held a 29-18 edge in ground balls and won 12 of the game's 18 faceoffs. The Hounds forced 17 Bentley turnovers and were successful in 24-of-26 clear attempts. Bentley also held a slight 34-30 advantage in shots and the two teams combined to be 0-for-4 on man-up opportunities.
With the loss, Assumption falls to 5-7 overall and 3-6 in Northeast-10 Conference play, while Bentley improves to 6-4 overall and 6-2 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, April 16th as the Hounds travel to Pace University for a 3:30 p.m. start in Pleasantville, N.Y.
