Worcester, Mass. (April 1) -- Led by a three-goal, one-assist effort by senior Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa), the Assumption College men's lacrosse team pulled away for a 12-6 home win over Bentley University on Wednesday night at the Multi-Sport Stadium.
The Hounds got on the board just 42 seconds into the first on an unassisted goal from senior Ty Martina (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield). Smith added to the lead moments later as he came from behind the net and fired in his 12th goal of the season for the 2-0 advantage. The Falcons answered with 3:35 left in the first on a man-up goal from Matt Dente, marking one of two man-up scores for Bentley on the day.
Senior Paul Curran (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) closed out the first quarter scoring with 1:44 remaining as he came around the net from the left and fired over his shoulder for the 3-1 AC lead after one period.
Smith increased the advantage to 4-1 near the midway point of the second quarter, scoring off a rebound from his own shot as he scooped up the ground ball for the goal. Bentley took control for a final possession with 15.5 seconds on the clock and capitalized as Mike Giorgetti scored with nine seconds remaining for the 4-2 score at the break.
Bentley outshot the Hounds 19-17 in the first half, while Assumption was successful on 9-of-10 clear attempts and held a 17-10 advantage in ground balls for the period.
Assumption opened the third on a 3-0 scoring run over the first 4:10, including a goal from Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week Conor Darby (Haverhill, Mass./Proctor Academy) off a great pass from Curran found the freshman cutting to the net. Martina picked up a man-up goal just 1:37 later, followed by the second goal of the season from junior Cameron Murphy (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian), for the 7-2 lead.
The Falcons cut into the Assumption lead substantially over the next 3:39, starting with an unassisted goal from Dente to make it 7-3. Matt Sanford added his seventh goal of the season with 6:50 on the clock, followed by a Bobby Hinds man-up goal to make it 7-5. Assumption answered with a decisive 5-0 scoring spurt to put the game out of reach though, including three goals over the final 2:48 of the third for the 10-5 lead heading to the final quarter.
Curran added his second goal of the game just 30 seconds into the fourth off a rebound, while Smith scored his third goal of the game as he faked the Falcon defense for the 12-5 lead with 7:14 left. Dente capped off the game's scoring and the hat trick with 6:31 remaining, accounting for the eventual 12-6 final.
Smith led the Hounds with his three-goal, one-assist performance, followed by two goals each from Martina, Curran and Darby. Dente was the lone multi-goal scorer for Bentley with three goals to go along with one assist.
Senior Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) made 11 saves in the win, while Daniel Shaughnessy took the loss as he played 34:10 in net and made four stops.
For the game, Bentley outshot Assumption 37-34 and won 13-of-20 faceoffs, while Assumption converted 2-of-3 man-up chances, was successful on 17-of-19 clear attempts and held a 35-28 ground ball advantage.
The Hounds improve to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in Northeast-10 play, while Bentley drops to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, April 4th as the Hounds host Post University for a 1 p.m. non-conference game.
