Worcester, Mass. (April 15) -- In the team's final regular-season home game, the Assumption College men's lacrosse team defeated visiting American International by a convincing 14-6 final in Northeast-10 play at the Multi-Sport Stadium. The win is the fourth straight home victory for the Hounds and the team's fifth in its last six games overall.
Senior Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) led the Hounds with a six-goal outing as the Hounds staked to a 10-2 halftime lead. The game started slowly with a 2-0 score after one quarter before exploding for eight goals in the second. Overall, the Hounds led by an 8-0 margin with 5:51 left in the second quarter after the second of three goals from senior Tim Casey (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) before Bobby Spano got the Jackets on the board with a man-up score to make it 8-1. After Matt Cassidy closed the margin down to 8-2 with 2:08 remaining, Assumption picked up two goals from Smith in the final minute to send the game into the break.
The Hounds outshot the Yellow Jackets 18-6 in the first half and won 10-of-14 faceoff chances while forcing 11 AIC turnovers.
In the second half, the Hounds pushed the lead into double figures for the first time at 12-2 on a goal from freshman Blaine Birch (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) with 11:26 left in the third quarter. After Casey completed the hat trick with just 2:45 on the clock in the third, AIC scored a late pair to make it 13-4 heading to the fourth quarter. The Yellow Jackets outscored Assumption 2-1 in the final period, en route to the 14-6 final score. Freshman Patrick O'Brien (Oyster Bay, N.Y./St. Dominic) picked up his first career goal in the fourth for Assumption, assisted on by classmate Patrick Ward (Canton, Mass./Kents Hill School).
Senior goalie Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) played nearly 54 minutes to pick up his seventh win of the season, while Perry Booker made eight saves in the loss.
Assumption outshot AIC 36-17 for the game, held a 43-22 advantage in ground balls and was 2-for-3 in man-up chances in the contest. Smith led all scorers with six goals, along with three goals and three assists by Casey.
Cassidy posted two goals for the Yellow Jackets, while Jeff Sienkiewicz had one goal and one assist.
With the win, Assumption is now 7-6 overall and an even 4-4 in Northeast-10 play, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 2-10 overall and remain winless in the league at 0-9.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, April 18th as the Hounds take on the College of Saint Rose for a 6 p.m. start in Albany, N.Y.
