Albany, N.Y. (April 18) – An overtime goal from senior Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) lifted the Assumption College men's lacrosse team to an 8-7 overtime win at the College of Saint Rose on Saturday night at the Palmieri Sports Complex. The win clinches a Northeast-10 Tournament berth for the Hounds and is the third straight victory and sixth in the last seven games for the surging Hounds.
In a slow first quarter, Assumption took the early 1-0 edge on an unassisted goal from senior Ty Martina (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) with 6:32 on the clock. Saint Rose closed the period with a pair of unassisted goals from Kris Miller and Kevin Fleming just 1:32 apart to take a 2-1 advantage into the second.
Midway thru the second, senior Peter Gersbeck (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) tallied a man-up goal to tie the game, followed by a goal from senior John Greco (Setauket, N.Y./Ward-Melville) to go in front 3-2 with 6:11 on the clock. Fleming tied the game at 4-4 less than two minutes later before Smith took a pass from Martina with 3:16 remaining in the half to make the score 4-3 at the break.
Miller tied the game midway thru the third and eventually Fleming completed his hat trick with a man-up goal for the Golden Knights with 5:44 left in the period for the 5-4 advantage. Martina scored just 50 seconds later though, sending the evenly-matched contest into the fourth quarter knotted at 5-5.
Senior Paul Curran (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) put the Hounds back in front to start the fourth, followed by a man-down goal from Matt Graham to tie the game with 6:19 left. Smith tallied an unassisted goal to make it 7-6 in the final four minutes before the Golden Knights sent the game into overtime with an Assumption own goal at the 2:41 mark.
In the overtime, the Hounds gained possession and called timeout in the extra four-minute period. Nearing the midway point, Smith fired a shot that was saved but he gained control of the rebound and tallied his third goal of the game for the game winner and the 8-7 final in favor of the Hounds.
Senior goalie Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) made 11 saves in the win, while Nick Longo had 11 stops in the defeat.
Smith led the Hounds with the hat trick, along with two goals and one assist from Martina and one goal and one assist from Curran. Fleming posted three goals and one assist for the Golden Knights, along with two goals and two assists from Miller.
As a team, the Hounds forced 15 Saint Rose turnovers while winning 15-of-19 faceoffs, converting 16-of-18 clear attempts and holding a 41-21 advantage in ground balls.
With the win, Assumption now sits at 8-6 overall and 5-4 in Northeast-10 play, while Saint Rose drops to 4-9 overall and 3-7 in the league.
The Hounds control their own destiny in the playoff seeding and can clinch the league's No. 5 spot with wins in their final two regular-season games. Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, April 22nd as the Hounds travel to Grappone Stadium in Manchester, N.H. for a 7 p.m. contest at Saint Anselm.
