Colchester, Vt. (April 25) -- In the 2015 regular-season finale, the Assumption College men's lacrosse team dropped a narrow 8-7 road final at Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon at Duffy Field. The Hounds advance to the Northeast-10 Tournament for the first time since 2011 and just the second time in program history, earning the No. 5 seed in the six-team tournament.
Matt Dromeshauser tallied his 16th goal of the season just 1:08 into the first for the early 1-0 Purple Knight lead before senior Peter Gersbeck (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) answered less than a minute later for the equalizer. Saint Michael's eventually led 3-2 after one quarter of play before Hounds freshman Conor Darby (Haverhill, Mass./Proctor Academy) notched his 22nd goal of the season to open the second and tie things up at 3-3. The goal sparked a 3-0 Assumption scoring run as scores by senior Paul Curran (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and Darby made it a 5-3 halftime margin in favor of the Hounds.
In the third, Saint Michael's held a convincing 2-0 scoring edge and a 10-9 advantage in total shots, sending the game into the fourth tied at 5-5 as Tom Fitzgerald and Dromeshauser scored in the third period. Jamie McGill briefly put the hosts up 6-5 with 6:05 left in regulation before consecutive goals by Assumption senior Ty Martina (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) gave the Hounds their last lead of the game with 3:55 remaining on the clock. Daegan Goodman tied things up at the 2:57 mark for St. Mike's, followed by the eventual game winner just 21 seconds later from Mark Yetter for the 8-7 final.
Martina and Darby each posted two goals in the loss, while Dromeshauser finished with the hat trick for Saint Michael's.
Senior Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) made 17 stops in the loss, while Matt Hanley turned aside eight shots in the victory for the Knights.
The Purple Knights held a 37-28 advantage in total shots, while Assumption won 10-of-19 faceoffs, collected 29 ground balls and forced 15 Purple Knight turnovers.
Assumption will travel to No. 4 seeded Franklin Pierce on Tuesday for a Northeast-10 Tournament First Round game that will be played at 4 p.m. in Rindge, N.H.
