Rindge, N.H. (April 28) -- On Tuesday afternoon at Sodexo Field, the Assumption College men's lacrosse season ended with a 9-5 loss to Franklin Pierce University in the first round of the 2015 Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The playoff appearance marked the second in program history and the first since the 2011 season.
The Hounds got on the board just 48 seconds in as senior Tim Casey (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) came around from behind the net and fired high for the early 1-0 lead. After a man-up goal from Casey Burnett tied it, Casey struck for a second time with 2:43 remaining in the first quarter for the 2-1 Assumption advantage after one quarter. In the second, senior Ty Martina (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) opened the scoring with his 24th goal of the season for the 3-1 lead, followed by an Erik Kelly goal with under two minutes til halftime as the Hounds led 3-2 at the break.
Franklin Pierce tied the game at 3-3 just 1:50 into the third quarter as Malcolm Sutton scored an even-strength goal for his second score of the season. The Ravens took the lead with just 27.8 seconds left in the period as Eddie Noonan found the net for his first goal of the game and 38th of the year as the hosts led 4-3 heading to the final period.
Noonan extended the lead to 5-3 with 13:01 left in the fourth, followed by an unassisted score from Louis Palumbo just seven seconds later to swing momentum to the Ravens at 6-3. Freshman Conor Darby (Haverhill, Mass./Proctor Academy) briefly closed the margin down to 6-4 with his 24th goal of the season before Palumbo's second of the game made it a three-score deficit.
Martina scored the final goal of his career with 5:22 remaining in the game, followed by Noonan and Burnett goals to account for the 9-5 final.
Overall, Franklin Pierce outshot Assumption 36-24 while the Hounds converted 17-of-19 clear attempts, won 13-of-18 faceoffs and forced eight Raven turnovers.
Martina and Casey led the offense with two goals each, while Noonan had three goals and one assist to lead the Ravens.
Senior Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) made 13 saves in the loss, while Don Denman turned aside eight shots for the Ravens in the victory.
Assumption ends the season at 9-8 overall, while Franklin Pierce advances to the league semifinals and improves to 12-3 on the season. The nine-win campaign ties the Assumption program's single-season record for victories.
