Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. (April 7) -- Despite rallying from 8-1 down to close to within 9-6 late in the third quarter, the Assumption College men's lacrosse team dropped an eventual 13-6 road final at No. 5 ranked Adelphi University on a blustery Tuesday afternoon on Long Island.

The Panthers jumped on the scoreboard just over two and a half minutes into the game for the 1-0 lead. Adelphi pushed the advantage out to a 6-0 margin over the first 12 minutes, led by a pair of goals from Nick Susko, before the Hounds got on the board with 2:19 left in the first quarter. Named the NE-10 Rookie of the Week for the third time this season earlier in the day, freshman Conor Darby (Haverhill, Mass./Proctor Academy) tallied his first goal of the game off an assist from senior Peter Gersbeck (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River). The Panthers closed out the first-quarter scoring though with a goal from Jamie McAndrew with just 19 seconds on the clock for the 7-1 edge after one.

After Adelphi opened the second period with a goal from Tim Daly, the rest of the first half belonged to Assumption as Darby and Gersbeck both scored and the Hounds defense stood strong to send the game into the halftime break at 8-3. The Hounds held a 3-1 scoring advantage in the third quarter as well, eventually pulling to within three for the first time at 8-5 on the 15th goal of the season by senior Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) with 10:24 left in the period. After a goal from Anthony DeLuca ended a 4-0 Assumption scoring run, sophomore Connor Munisteri (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) scored with 4:08 on the clock for the three-goal margin heading to the final quarter.

In the fourth, the momentum swung back to the Panthers with a 4-0 scoring run in the period to come away with the eventual 13-6 victory. Four different Adelphi players scored in the quarter, including a man-up goal from Susko to complete the hat trick.

For the game, Assumption forced 13 turnovers and converted 13-of-19 clear attempts while winning of 10-of-23 faceoff chances overall.

Senior goalie Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) faced 30 shots on goal, making 17 saves in another excellent effort. For the Panthers, DJ Mauro posted a six-save performance while picking up the victory.
