-The Lead: The Assumption College men's ice hockey team claimed a 5-3 victory over the visiting Eagles of Daniel Webster College on Wednesday night at Buffone Arena. Senior Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Mass. / Northfield Mount Hermon) scored two of the Hounds goals on the night while junior Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J. / Wayne Valley) notched three points on one goal and two assists.
The Hounds return to action on Saturday, Jan. 23, against Stonehill for their Mental Illness Awareness game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
-After nearly a full period of scoreless action, it was Bete to score the first goal of the game at 18:13 to give the Hounds the lead. The senior was assisted by Gomez and sophomore Brian Farrell (Island Park, N.Y. / West Boca).
-Daniel Webster tied it up in the seventh minute (7:40) of the second period before junior Kevin Murphy (North Conway, NH / Kennett), assisted by sophomore Tommy Mahoney (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree), once again put the Hounds ahead just 10 seconds later.
-Bete added an insurance goal at 16:54, once again assisted by Gomez and Farrell.
-The third period proved eventful as both squads tallied two more goals. The Eagles' Ryan Murray capitalized on a power play to make it 3-2 Hounds before senior Alex Erban (Attleboro, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles) scored at 18:43 to once again give Assumption the two-goal lead.
-Murray struck again at 19:16 to reduce the Eagle deficit to one but Gomez notched the final goal on an empy net just 29 seconds later for the 5-3 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-Gomez led Assumption with three points on one goal and two assists while both Bete and Farrell collected two points apiece.
-Murphy, Erban and sophomore Matt Cowles (Farmington, Conn. / Avon Old Farms) each posted six shots on goal on the day.
-Junior Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Mass. / The Governor's Academy) tallied 35 saves between the pipes compared to 64 for Daniel Webster's Morgan Hudson in 59:37.
-Overall the Greyhounds outshot the Eagles 69-38 including a 22-shot margin in the first period, a 25-15 differential in the second and a narrow 18-15 edge in the third.
-Daniel Webster went 1-for-3 on power-play attempts while the Hounds finished 0-for-4.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
-The win marks Assumption's eighth of the season with eight more games left in the regular season. Last season, the Hounds claimed eight victories in total and prior to that, Assumption had not earned more than seven wins in a single season since 2011-12 when the Hounds went 13-11-1.
-Commesso currently ranks first in the Northeast-10 in save percentage (.930) and in win percentage (.667).
-Commesso is also tied for second in the nation among DII and DIII hockey teams in shutouts with six and is tied for 25th in win percentage.
-Bete continues to top the league in points (29), goals scored (18) and power play goals (6).
-Bete also ranks seventh nationally with 1.69 points per game, third in goals per game (1.00) and tied for second in power play goals.
-Gomez leads the NE-10 in assists with 17, and ranks second in overall points with 25.
-Gomez is also ranked 10th nationally in assists per game (0.94).
-The Greyhounds are ranked 12th in the nation as a team in scoring offense with 3.78 goals per game.
