The Lead: The Assumption College football team jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter and didn't look back, as the Hounds defeated Saint Anselm 39-14 in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Multi-Sport Stadium this evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With Assumption leading 3-0 early, Saint Anselm took their second drive down inside Hound territory as senior quarterback Yianni Gavalas completed a 34-yard pass to sophomore Kyle Hill to get down to the Assumption 25-yard line. However on the next play, senior defensive back Charles Reid (Westampton, N.J. / Rancocas Valley Regional) broke on the pass attempt and intercepted Gavalas to turn the momentum.
- Six plays later, junior Marc Monks (Annandale, N.J. / North Hunterdon) found classmate Ashton Grant (Manchester, Conn. / Manchester / East Coast Prep) in the back of the end-zone with 5:55 left in the first for a 10-0 advantage.
- The duo hooked up again just over a minute later to make the score 20-7, thanks to Kyle Contreras (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / John Jay / East Coast Prep), who picked off Gavalas to set the offense up with a short field. Monks capitalized with a two-yard pass to Grant, giving the junior his tenth touchdown reception of the season with 4:31 left.
- After junior Cole Tracy's (Camarillo, Calif. / Newbury Park) second field goal of the first half, Saint Anselm junior running back Joe Hayman took a handoff 27 yards to paydirt, cutting the Assumption lead to 20-7 with 12:28 remaining in the half.
- On Assumption's ensuing possession, Monks lofted a psss to sophomore Brandon Swain-Price (Stoughton, Mass. / Stoughton) and he did the rest, sprinting past the defense for a 68-yard catch and run and his third career touchdown reception.
- Tracy connected on two more field goals in the second quarter, from 22 yards and from 42 yards to put the Hounds in front 33-7 at the break.
- The Assumption offense sputtered in the second half. Two more Tracy field goals, from 25 and 45 yards provided a 39-7 lead going to the fourth. He had a chance to break his own school record of six early in the fourth but was just wide on the 46-yard attempt.
- Saint Anselm put together a 12-play drive spanning 71-yards late in the fourth quarter, culminating in a four-yard touchdown run by Hayman for a 39-14 score.
- The Hawks tried to get one more score in the final minute of play, but Nolan Seward (May's Landing, N.J. / Cedar Creek) picked off a pass in the endzone to assure there would be no more scores.
