- The Lead: The Assumption College women's soccer team used two goals by junior Amanda Arnold (Saco, Maine / Thornton Academy) to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the opening ten minutes of the game, before Adelphi rallied to score three goals as the Hounds fell 3-2 in NE-10 play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption came out fast, as Arnold scored in the seventh and ninth minute to give the Hounds an early 2-0 lead. Arnold tallied her first goal when Adelphi's freshman goalkeeper Delaney Dayoan misplayed the ball in the box, allowing Arnold to put the Hounds in front. The junior doubled her goal output and the lead just two minutes later when senior Jaclyn Tomasello (Halifax, Mass. / Silver Lake Regional) ripped a shot off the crossbar that Arnold corralled and slipped past Dayoan to make it 2-0 Assumption.
- Adelphi cut the Assumption lead in half in the 39th minute when junior Jeanine Nunez converted a penalty kick for her 10th goal of the season. The Hounds were able to maintain their lead going into the half as the score stayed at 2-1.
- As the second half got under way, Adelphi put on the pressure as the Panthers were searching for the equalizing goal. They found it just four minutes into the half, when a corner kick by senior Morgan Santoro was punched momentarily out of danger by freshman goalkeeper Alexis Nason (Saco, Maine / Thornton Academy). The ball traveled to the edge of the center of the box where senior Victoria Antonino volleyed it out of the air into the back of the net to tie the score up at two goals apiece.
- The Panthers tallied the game winning goal in the 76th minute, when Nunez poked the ball passed Nason from inside of the six yard box that barely went over the goal-line. Assumption pushed forward looking to force overtime, but freshman Alexis Stowell's (Franklin, Mass. / Franklin) shot sailed high in the 81st minute and sophomore Kallie Villemaire's (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown) shot tailed wide in the 90th minute as Adelphi was able to hold on for a 3-2 win.
