The Lead: Assumption took a 4-3 lead midway through the third period, but Suffolk stormed back with a pair of goals to grab a 5-4 advantage and held off a furious last minute rally by the Hounds to earn a 5-4 win in the home-opener for both teams on Saturday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Hounds struck first, as Brian Farrell (Island Park, N.Y. / South Kent School (USPHL U18)) put home a shot off a feed from Cam Laughlin (Natick, Mass. / Portland Jr. Pirates (USPHL Premier)) at 15:46 on a power play for the 1-0 advantage.
- The lead was short-lived as Sean Henry answered back at 18:25 for Suffolk's first goal of the 2016 season.
- Just ten seconds into the second, Assumption took back the lead. It was Farrell on a power play goal right in front off assists from Laughlin and Matt Cowles (Farmington, Conn. / Avon Old Farms (Prep)).
- Midway through the period, the Rams evened it up, as Justin Holliday wristed home a goal at 10:26.
- Suffolk scored less than a minute into the third period on a power play to take a 3-2 lead, but Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J. / Washington Jr. Nationals (AJHL)) responded with a nice wrister right in in front to even it up on the Hounds.
- Assumption then grabbed a 4-3 lead on Farrell's third goal, with his hat trick taking place at 6:28 off an assist from Robert Roche (Holden, Mass. / Tri City Storm (USHL)).
- Suffolk responded quickly, evening up the score at 8:59 on a Tommy Bishop goal and he added the game-winner one minute later.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption held a slight 42-41 shot advantage in the contest. The Hounds also capitalized on their power play opportunities going 4-for-8, while limiting the Rams to 1-for-4
- Brian Farrell led the offense with a hat trick while Laughin dished off three assists.
- Michael Levine earned the win in net for Suffolk, stopping 38 of 42 shots while Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Mass. / Walpole Express (AJHL)) took the loss while making 35 saves.
