The Lead: Saint Rose scored twice in the opening 20 minutes but were peppered by Assumption shots over the final 70 minutes, before evenually scoring in the final 80 seconds. However, it was too little too late as Golden Knights still escaped with a 2-1 win on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption applied early pressure, but it was the Golden Knights who struck first. In the 12th minute, St. Rose earned a free kick from 35 yards out. Totianya Gaudalupe took the kick and fired the ball into the box, where it hit the crossbar before landing on the feet of Sammy Blizzard, who managed to get it in the back of the net.
- The Golden Knights extended their lead in the 20th minute following another free kick after an Assumption foul. The ball came into the six and it bounced off multiple players before Eva Frazzoni was able to collect the ball and just tap in past a diving Alexis Nason (Saco, Maine / Thornton Academy).
- Trailing 2-0 at the half, the Hounds nearly tied the game in the 47th minute. Jessica FitzGerald (Uxbridge, Mass. / Uxbridge) beat her defender and ripped a shot from inside the corner of 18, forcing goalie Madison Taylor to leap and punch it out of harm's way.
- In the 54th minute, Amanda Arnold (Saco, Maine / Thornton Academy) fed a nice ball into the box for Alexis Stowell (Franklin, Mass. / Franklin) and she beat Taylor, but her shot hit the inside of the post and bounced back into play.
- The Hounds finally got on the board with just 1:12 remaining, as Arnold lofted a cross to the middle of the six and Kallie Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown) rose above the defense to head it into the far corner of the net.
- Stowell got off a shot in the final 40 seconds in an attempt to tie the contest, but Taylor was there to make the save.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption held a 31-12 edge in shots, including an 18-4 advantage in the second half along. The Hounds also had seven corner kicks, compared to just four for the visitors.
- Villemaire put a team-high four shots on net, while Stowell has three shots on goal to pace the team.
- Nason took the loss in net as she stopped five shots while allowing the two goals in 90 minutes. Taylor secured the win by making 14 saves for the Golden Knights.
